Google Penalties – What you should avoid
Well, what I am going to share with you is very crucial for every webmaster and maybe even for every website in general.
Your website might suffer from a google penalty without you even knowing about it.
Here are some of the most common google penalties and how you can identify them easily:
Google Agressive Linkbuilding Penalty:
This is the most obvious. Most beginners will sooner or later run into this thinking they can beat Google by adding as many links as fast as you can. You should avoid adding a lot of links in a short time, especially when your site is new. The backlinkbuilding penalty won’t trigger that fast for established sites with PageRank. But, if your site is pretty new, you should avoid adding more than 5 backlinks per day and make sure that not all links come from the same page. E.g. adding 5 stories to digg on your first day wouldn’t be a good idea.
Penalty: For aggresive linkbuilding your site will drop out of the index. It is the so called Sandbox effect. You will stay in the sandbox for 1 week+, longer if you keep adding links from the same sources. Google likes natural links!
Google Penalty for Interlinking
This is tricky. Google doesn’t like it if you interlink your website to increase your PageRank, therefore you should add rel=”nofollow” to every link to one of your other sites. Actually, there is only one to cheat Google here and it’s pretty tricky, but I will explain that in another post.
Penalty: You could experience a decrease of your SERPS by 5-30 positions.
Google Penalty for Hidden Text
Don’t ever try it! Google doesn’t like hidden text at all. If you have hidden text, Google might even give you penalties for the hidden keywords. A workaround? If you really have to hide some text, add style=”color:#fff” to your text and put it on an area with white background. Instead I would recommend to write posts where you mention the keywords. If they are irrelevant to the site’s content or you don’t want people to see the text, simply move the post away from the front-page to page 5,10, whatever.
Penalty: +60 SERPS
The Affiliate Penalty
Google doesn’t like affiliate links. If you have too many of them on your site, e.g. if you review Amazon products *only* and you add affiliate links to every post, you risk getting a *serious* Google penalty. Sidenote: The next Google update will make this even worse! Workaround? Be creative, add your affiliate links to another domain and link to that link. On your own site add rel=”nofollow” to the link.
Workaround:
Domain A -> Link to Domain B attribute nofollow -> Domain B -> Link to Affiliate Page
Domain B will get the penalty and your site will dominate the SERPS.
Penalty: +80 SERPS possible
Over-Optimization Penalty
Google doesn’t like it if you over-optimize your site. Yahoo does btw (at the moment, but they are changing things too), but Google not. If you add the keywords you want to rank for too many times you’ll get a penalty for that specific keyword. Make it look natural.
Penalty: +60 SERPS possible
